How will I select the photos I want?
I will edit you photos down to the best of the batch and upload them to my Client Proofing Portal on PhotoShelter. I will email you a link to your Online Gallery, where you can select you favorites. If there are multiple people involved in the selection process, they can each select favorites and I can see where your choices overlap.
How will you deliver the photos to me?
Photographs can be downloaded directly from the PhotoShelter website, but I can also save your photos to a thumb drive and deliver/mail it to you upon request. Once selections are made, and photos are retouched I will make them available for download through the website and email you a new link so you may do so. You can choose the file size, so you may want to download the full sized files for printing, and also download the same photos as small files for web use.
Will you retouch my photos?
In my first edit I will adjust photos for exposure and color, etc. For your selected photos, my standard retouching includes the brightening of eyes and teeth, removal of blemishes and spots. Digital photography is so good these days that you can see every pore on faces, so I often selectively soften skin in portraits as well. Additional retouching is billed at an hourly rate.
What is Copyright?
Copyright is the exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of years, to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material.
For example, if you buy a painting, you own the painting and can hang it in your home, but you cannot make copies of it and sell posters on Etsy. That would be stealing intellectual property, and a violation of federal copyright law. Similarly, if a client pays me a licensing fee for specific usage of the photos I created for them, they may not use the photos in ways beyond our contracted agreement, nor can they give or sell the images to others for commercial use.
What are licensing fees?
Licensing fees are charged on photographs used for commercial marketing purposes, and they vary depending on the clients' intended usage. For example, clients will pay less for an image that will be used for one social media post, than the same image used for a national ad campaign for 20 years.
What is the difference between Rights-Managed and Royalty-Free Licenses?
Rights-managed licenses grant the buyer the right to use the image(s) in specific media, in specific location(s), for a specific amount of time. Royalty-Free licenses allow multiple uses of image(s) with few restrictions.
What’s the difference between Exclusive and Non-Exclusive Rights?
Exclusive rights mean that the photographer cannot sell the photos to another buyer. This is most common with assignment photography where the photographer is creating images for a specific client.
Non-exclusive rights mean the photographer can sell the image(s) to others. This situation usually applies to images that the photographer has previously shot and the buyer wants to license the image for use. If they want to make sure that the photo doesn’t show up elsewhere they can opt for an exclusive license but this is usually more expensive because the image would no longer have monetary value to the photographer.
